Thanksgiving in Canada

Official Recognition
The first official Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated on November 6, 1879, following a series of earlier observances. The holiday was initially organized by Protestant clergy and was intended for public thanksgiving and prayer. Over the years, Thanksgiving evolved into a more secular celebration, focusing on family gatherings and harvest appreciation.

In 1957, the Canadian government officially declared Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the second Monday in October, aligning it with the fall harvest season. Today, it is recognized as a statutory holiday in most provinces and territories, although some regions, like Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, do not observe it as a public holiday.
